The film takes place in one day from morning to evening in Sintra, the beautiful city in Portugal. And this beauty of nature opposes to the withering and illness of the main character, emphasizes the transience of life.
The main character, a movie star Frankie, who brilliantly played Isabelle Huppert, has cancer and knows that she hasn’t long to live. But don’t think it’s a film about illness and struggle, no. It’s different.
Unusual role Huppert for me here. Her character is too quiet, calm, without any strong emotions. I think this Huppert I have not seen in any of her films. And in fact, the main words in “Frankie” are not pronounced, they are read between the lines.
Frankie gathers the whole family to talk about their future life without her, to help solve their problems. And in all these dialogues, no matter how businesslike they are, we feel the great love and longing of people close to each other.
As it may seems, Frankie calmly accepts her illness and her impending death. She doesn’t care. But here she accidentally falls on the birthday of her old fan, who turns many years, looks at the cake, candles, joy. And we can see in her eyes all the bitterness and pain that she will not live to such an age.
Another great acting job in this movie is Marisa Tomei. She played friend Frankie which arriving in Sintra for this one day with steeply changes her life. At all this one day becomes very important for everyone characters in the movie.
Very beautiful final shot in the mountains at sunset. Frankie stands and looks down at her family and friends. It’s like she’s not here anymore. But it still looks optimistic, oddly enough. This is due to the skill of the Director. Ira Sachs was able to shoot all the scenes, plans that showed all the unsaid emotions of the characters, their inner world. That is why the theme of the movie is sad, but after watching remains on the contrary a very light feeling and love of life.
So for me this film is not about illness and death. This is a film about the beauty around us, how beautiful life is, but we often don’t notice it immersed in their small problems.
I recommend watching this movie.

William Miller’s documentary chronicles the 10-year history of the popular indie rock band Deer Tick.
“There are some haters about the name ‘Deer Tick, ‘” admits frontman John McCauley at the beginning of William Miller’s documentary about the indie folk-rock band, and these people would be well advised to avoid Straight Into a Storm. The film simply fails to provide much reason for nonfans to particularly care about the rise to cult stardom of the Rhode Island-birthed group.
While the most effective music documentaries manage to be interesting even for those viewers previously unfamiliar with their subjects, this effort will probably only please Deer Tick devotees; for all others it will most likely feel a slog. The doc revolves around the band’s 10th anniversary series of shows at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl, which took place more than three years ago, so it doesn’t even feel particularly timely.
The main subject is McCauley, the band’s lead singer-songwriter, who, in not unusual fashion for rock musicians, has evolved from a drug-and-alcohol abusing young man to an only slightly drug-and-alcohol abusing husband and father. Archival footage and interviews provide plenty of evidence of his hellraising years, but McCauley now says that he’s much more responsible. He does still enjoy psychedelic drugs, but he doesn’t take them all the time, he assures us. What he does take regularly is baldness medication, which he rubs on his scalp twice daily. Such is the plight of aging rockers, although he’s barely past 30.
The film chronicles the band’s rise from obscurity to semi-obscurity (at least in mainstream terms), incorporating concert footage ranging from early appearances in front of audiences numbering in the dozens to well-received shows at the Newport Folk Festival to their sold-out anniversary concerts at the midsize Brooklyn venue. Unfortunately, much of the concert footage is so poorly photographed and choppily edited that the band’s music isn’t given an effective showcase.
McCauley proves a reasonably engaging subject, but not one charismatic or articulate enough to warrant such extensive attention. A lengthy anecdote about a psychedelic drug-infused visit to Bed, Bath & Beyond will not likely supplant stories involving Led Zeppelin or The Rolling Stones when it comes to legendary rock ‘n’ roll debauchery. But he’s at least more interesting than the other bandmembers, such as drummer Dennis Ryan, whose account of his reasons for writing a song about serial killer John Wayne Gacy doesn’t inspire confidence in the band’s lyrical depth.
The documentary also includes numerous interviews with various friends, colleagues and former members of the band that prove strictly of the typical variety, with many predictable paeans to the quality of Deer Tick’s songs and the indomitable work ethic that has fueled the band through a decade of relentless touring. But while the group certainly seems to deserve the success it’s achieved, that doesn’t make Straight Into a Storm engrossing viewing.

I’ve never seen a movie quite like this one and I can’t stop thinking about it. If you like mysteries and time loops then you will like this twilight zonish movie. I went looking for more movies to explore some of these ideas, but I could not find one.

Beautiful colouring on this one, it gives it the feeling of falling into a three dimensional object rather than zooming in further and further into a two dimensional image. I like the thin black stripes between the colours very much too.

It ranges from brilliant to ridiculous to horrible- sometimes during the course of two scenes. I understand the limitations of working with a low budget, and they did a fairly good job of just making a coherent story. I’ve seen many low budget features and shorts that weren’t even coherent, let alone good.
I just don’t like its imbalanced tone and story. My main problem: when Justin Benson’s character threw down verbally against the cult leader there should have been a tonal change with him that lasted for the remainder of the film. No one would have such an epiphany and verbally blow up at someone about the horrible conditions in that place then just lollygag through the remainder of his escape. Just moments after he decided that he wanted to leave he seemed as indifferent and lethargic as he seemed during the beginning of the film. There was no sense of urgency or anger or even panic in his acting- normal things that one would expect in those conditions. It might have been a limitation of him directing himself.
Aaron Moorehead’s performance as his brother was almost as uneven. They seemed to play basically the same people from the start of the film to its ending. I misinterpreted their natural performances at the beginning of the film as the signs of good actors. No.
If no one seems to emote the danger and urgency in a film, why should a viewer care?
Overall, it’s a so-so film.

All those concepts were made up by humans. They exist, like how laughter exists, but they’re not more powerful if their concept is more poethic or important in human culture. If I made a comic about the entity everything would it be more powerful than any of the 7 dark gods? Whatever we define, we’ll never know what the fourth dimension is truly like, or know any real truth except from our perceptions. People should stop obsessing over thoughts that are beyond them. There’s no higher deity that makes your life meaningful, you’re the only one that can do that. If you accept that your life has meaning, then it does, we’re delusional like that. You could always argue nothing has meaning, or everything has meaning, but does it matter for you? As a human? No. You can choose to accept your place in the universe, or become even more delusional by believing something you know isn’t true, or you can be miserable. It’s pretty simple.

This movie is tied to a 2012 movie called Resolution. It’s about potentially extra terrestrial occurences and sci-fi mind games. I saw many people who reviewed this movie have no clue. They haven’t seen Resolution, therefore not making the proper correlations. Even by itself though, the film stands well on its own 2 legs. It’s entertaining, suspenseful, has bits of comedy, a good story and leaves room for the imagination. Now, put it with Resolution (an underappreciated movie that sadly isn’t as well known as it should be) and the movie takes on wings. Watch both for so many reasons. It’s a great story that slowly develops into way more than what it seems. If you don’t like ‘re not doing it right. Only complaint is some less than perfect acting (inexperienced or just a little bland seeming. The flavorless acting at times may very well be intentional though to portray the characters as regular dudes. They don’t need to be extremely emotional. Next time I watch I will decide how I feel about that. All in all, worth watching more than once.

I really enjoyed this film budget doesnt matter its better to not waste money even though this didnt look cheap still. But the Headthrash it has is brilliant i will for sure watch the other film’s made by them and hope they continue to produce such mind bending stories.
